At least six Saudi-backed mercenaries were killed after Yemeni forces shelled their positions in the Arab country’s central Ma’rib province, east of the capital, Sana’a.

A military source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told Saba news agency on Sunday that the artillery unit of the Yemeni army pounded the militants’ positions with mortar rounds in the Sirwah district of Ma’rib Province.

During the raids, at least six militants, including two ringleaders, were killed.

The mercenaries were hit in al-Makhdarah area, the source added.

The retaliatory attack came after Saudi warplanes bombed residential areas in the Sa’ada and Hajjah provinces of Yemen, killing at least 10 civilians, including an entire family.

Yemen’s defenseless people have been under massive attacks by a coalition led by Saudi Arabia for more than two years but Riyadh has reached none of its objectives in Yemen so far.

Since March 2015, Saudi Arabia and some of its Arab allies have been carrying out deadly airstrikes against the Houthi Ansarullah movement in an attempt to restore power to the fugitive former president Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.

Over 12,000 Yemenis, including thousands of women and children, have lost their lives in the deadly military campaign.
