In a new denunciation of Yemen’s brutal policies and violations of all human rights, the United Nations said it had reason to believe that Yemeni prisoners were subjected to ill-treatment, torture and sexual abuse by elements of the UAE forces.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Liz Throsel, told the Anatolia news agency yesterday that the UAE was running secret prisons in Yemen.

“We have discussed with the UAE government about this regard, and we have applied for access to Yemeni-run prisons in Yemen, but to date, they have not been granted access,” said Throsel.

“According to preliminary information that our office in Yemen has successfully collected, there are reasons to believe that Yemeni prisoners have been subjected to ill-treatment, torture and sexual harassment by elements of the UAE army,” she added.

Throsil said they were monitoring the situation in the prisons run by the UAE to decide the next step in this regard.

It should be noted that recently 18 secret prisons in Yemen have been used by Abu Dhabi or Yemeni forces, backed by the UAE in the south of the country.
